The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) provides data for the construction sector, as part of its goods-producing industries supersector group. The construction cost data in this section is gathered by the BLS from companies engaged in the construction of buildings. That construction work may include new construction, additions, alterations, or maintenance and repairs.
For the housing industry, the most important categories of cost data are labor and materials. Labor reflects the Average Hourly Earnings of all employees in construction. Materials reflects the Producer Price Index for companies that deal in building materials and supplies. As the largest category of housing materials, data for lumber prices is also included.
