The Census Bureau provides historical rent rate data.  The data is based on the Decennial Census, which is collected every 10 years.  In between each Decennial Census, the Census Bureau also collects annual housing data through it American Community Survey (ACS). ACS is used by community leaders, nonprofits, and businesses to analyze demographics within their communities.

The rent rate data provided in this section was compiled from historic Decennial Census tables dating back to 1940.  More recent housing data was collected through the Census Bureau's QuickFacts database search engine.  QuickFacts combines data from both the Census and the American Community Surveys.

The Census Bureau defines gross rent as "the monthly amount of rent plus the estimated average monthly cost of utilities (electricity, gas, water and sewer) and fuels (oil, coal, kerosene, wood, etc.)." The rent data from the Census Bureau is computed for renter-occupied units paying cash (unsubsidized).
