The Census Bureau and the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) provide information on housing development. That information includes data on efforts to increase the supply of housing. The primary housing supply datapoints that are collected include: permits; authorized (but not started); started; under construction; and completed.
The data provided by the Census Bureau are for new, privately-owned housing units. That means housing being built by private developers and not public housing. It also excludes all housing that falls under the "HUD-code" for manufactured (mobile) homes.
